Problem Statement

0

Over 250 million individuals live with one form of disability across Africa.

0%

Over 95% of public indoor spaces in Africa remain unmapped and inaccessible to these individuals.

0%

Up to 60% of lost opportunities in healthcare, education, and employment start with inaccessible directions and lack of independence.

Our Vision.

To map every public indoor space in Africa and make them accessible and inclusive — through advanced AI, computer vision, and clear, context-aware, conversational voice navigation.

Imagine a visually impaired shopper walking into any mall in Africa and navigating straight to the shelf with their favourite product, independently. A student with a disability navigating their entire campus on the first day — finding lecture halls, restrooms, libraries — without stress, confusion, or needing a guide. That is the future Waide is building.

No Need For Expensive Mobility Aids

Initially, precise obstacle-free navigation was impossible for individuals with visual impairments, except for the wealthy who could afford expensive smart canes, mobility aids, or guide dogs. But not anymore. With Waide, any blind individual with just a smartphone can get precise directions both indoors wherever Waide Map is deployed, offering a more accessible and affordable solution for all.

How It Works

  • 1. Smartphone as a Smart Guide: The user opens the Waide app and points their phone’s camera at the environment. This initiates real-time scene analysis, enhanced by LiDAR sensors (where available) to accurately capture depth and spatial structure.
  • 2. Environment Detection with Computer Vision: Using advanced computer vision and LiDAR-based depth sensing, Waide detects key elements like stairs, desks, elevators, and passageways in the user’s surroundings.
  • 3. Real-Time Indoor Positioning: Waide combines the camera input with map and routing data to determine the user’s exact location within a building, using indoor positioning and pre-mapped floor plans.
  • 4. Intelligent Descriptions Using Image Captioning: Our image captioning model generates spoken descriptions of the environment, such as: “There is a desk to the right of the stairs.” This adds contextual understanding to raw spatial coordinates, helping users form a mental map of their surroundings. On supported devices, LiDAR sensors enhance this by detecting nearby objects and obstacles in real time — ensuring users not only know where they are but can safely navigate around any immediate barriers on their path.
  • 5. Conversational AI for Step-by-Step Guidance: Waide’s conversational AI delivers instructions in a friendly, human-like way: “Take the stairs on your left. Once upstairs, the elevator will be directly opposite you.”

Mapping Africa – Regional Roadmap

Phase One

Kickoff in Nigeria (Lagos)

Waide launches its mapping initiative in high-traffic districts across Nigeria starting with the first 100 public buildings. Powered by community donations, we’ll transform existing floorplans into smart, accessible digital maps.

Phase Two

Kenya Pilots Begin(Nairobi)

Waide will extend its reach to major East and West African countries, beginning with Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. The goal is to map 1,000+ public buildings, including transport hubs, universities, government offices, and cultural centers.

Phase Three

Africa-Wide Rollout

With strong backing from regional allies and funders, Waide will expand its efforts across multiple African countries, aiming to map over 10,000 key indoor locations. The initiative will prioritize crucial spaces, including public hospitals, schools, and government service buildings. In addition, localized map directions in various African languages will be incorporated
